Monarch Mayhem Results

Final Results

Our goal was to inspire youth across the country as well as educators to get involved in pollinator conservation through science lessons and gardening. We have been amazed by the response from Canadians!

We had approximately 1 600 youth sign up to learn more about Canada’s pollinators and 60 educators. An estimated 2 540 square feet of pollinator habitat was restored via pollinator-friendly planting. The Monarch March, a run designed to raise awareness of one of the largest insect migrations in the world, reached over 50% of the ambitious 4 000 km goal. A total distance of 2 180 km was submitted by educators to be used in the final results. This just goes to show how amazing the monarch migration is!

Outreach and education programs are an effective way to inspire action for conservation issues, such as the decline of pollinators in Canada. Here is one response we received from an educator, "This was a FANTASTIC program and I am thrilled to have participated. I teach French Immersion, and I integrated learning opportunities in both languages. We have read stories about monarch butterflies and practiced retell (literacy), sketched the perennial plants in our artbooks (art), planned a garden and considered what a plant needs to grow (science), explored the area and perimeter of our garden plans (math), and estimated how many steps are in a kilometer (math). All that remains is digging up the sod and planting our seeds, a hands-on activity that we will be doing later this week! THANK YOU for the inspiration!"
We want to create a buzz around pollinator conservation!
